Magnet In the Wire EP Pedal-steel / keyboard maestro Bill Elm and band slither like a sidewinder rattler over four weather-beaten instrumentals spread-eagled in the sand. "Main Theme" and "In the Wire" are the opening and closing cues from a spaghetti western that never was; just as mesmerizing are the covers of pop standards "Wichita Lineman" and "Tennessee Waltz." The dead-slow tempos on all four songs - packaged on a pair of seven-inches - allow Elm and guitarists Mike Semple and Chris Smith plenty of canvas to capture the sweeping majesty of desert-sky sunsets with broad brush strokes loaded with aquamarine, crimson and cobalt blue. - Jud Cost |
