Formed in Tucson in 1993, Friends of Dean Martinez are now based in Austin, TX, though their music still reflects the sexy languor of the American Southwest. They play sad, sweet, instrumental classics (most of them originals), with Bill's steel guitar acting as both lead guitar and voice. Friends Of Dean Martinez are just one of many contemporary bands rediscovering the emotional power of music beyond rock and roll. Friends of Dean Martinez have always had a revolving lineup, both live and in the studio, with Bill as the only constant member. Their debut, The Shadow Of Your Smile (Sub Pop), was released in August 1995 to considerable critical and popular acclaim; playing on the record were Van Christian, Tom Larkins (of Jonathan Richman's band), and then-Giant Sand members John Convertino and Joey Burns. Retrograde (Sub Pop), released in April 1997, again features all those guys, along with guitarist Woody Jackson (ex-Useless Playboys and longtime Friends accompanist), organist/accordionist Chris Cacavas (ex-Green on Red), and horn player Ralph Carney (from Tom Waits's band). |
